I love that my household is bilingual. But this week, the friendly tussle between the two languages in our household – English and Welsh – became more apparent and less friendly.
I’ve recently been speaking more English than I previously had to our daughter, Ceris. Before, I would muddle through in my broken Welsh. Ceris’ English is now improving faster than her Welsh, and this scares and saddens Carlie.
As a first-language Welsh speaker, Carlie worries that the ubiquitous and unrelenting steamroller that is the English language, will squeeze out her small but plucky native tongue.
And unfortunately, it probably will.
